What does a Backend Developer do at CareLineLive?
I work exclusively on the backend systems behind the product in Australia, focusing on building and improving APIs, business logic, integrations and data-driven features. My role is to ensure the platform remains reliable, scalable and easy to maintain, while also supporting the teams who use it every day in aged care.
Describe a typical day in your role
A typical day for me includes working on backend tasks, reviewing requirements, writing and improving code, fixing bugs, updating APIs and discussing solutions with the team. I also spend a lot of time thinking about edge cases, data accuracy, performance and how to make solutions cleaner, more stable, and easier to support.
What did you do in your previous role?
Before CareLineLive, I worked as a Software Engineer at One Click Life, where I developed and maintained Laravel-based web platforms supporting services across the tax, finance and identity verification sectors. My work included backend development, Livewire components, REST API integrations, MySQL and Redis optimisation and cloud-based solutions across AWS and Azure. I also contributed to projects involving Node.js, Flutter, React, WordPress, CI/CD pipelines and security improvements.
Why did you join CareLineLive?
It was important to me to work on a product that solves real problems and has practical value for people. CareLineLive stood out because it offered the opportunity to apply strong backend engineering skills in a meaningful domain, where technical decisions can genuinely improve day-to-day work in the care sector.
Best part of the job?
The best part of the job is solving real problems and turning complex requirements into practical, reliable solutions. It is especially rewarding when improvements genuinely help users and make processes easier.
Most challenging part of the job?
The most challenging part is the amount of detail, business rules and edge cases involved, because even small changes can require deep analysis. At the same time, that is also what makes backend development interesting.
What you most enjoy about working at CareLineLive?
What I enjoy most is working on a meaningful product in an important sector. I also like learning the business domain more deeply, improving the internal logic of the system and seeing how good technical decisions can make work easier for teams and improve the overall service.
What is something that people in aged care have to deal with that you want to help fix?
I would really like to help reduce administrative complexity and unnecessary friction in everyday processes. Aged care already involves a lot of responsibility and coordination, so the clearer the workflows, the more reliable the data and the less manual effort required, the more time people can spend on what really matters. Delivering outstanding care.
Surprising or a fun fact about you
My interest in computers started while I was still at school, before I even had a computer of my own. I travelled to computer courses in a neighbouring town, where I had the chance to learn about computers and study Pascal. Sometimes, if I missed the last transport home after class I had to walk back, which could be around seven kilometres. Later, my father bought me my first computer and continued to encourage my interest in technology. When there was a problem with Windows 98, he gave me a book and challenged me to work out how to restore the system myself. About a week later, I managed to do it. He later bought me Red Hat Linux as well and during one reinstall I accidentally deleted all the data on my computer. That was how I first discovered data recovery software and successfully recovered the files from my hard drive. Since then, I have been fascinated not just by using technology, but by understanding how it works at a deeper level. My first programming language was Pascal and one of my earliest ideas was to build an interactive periodic table in Visual Basic. I think now my son may be following in my footsteps!
